Due to a right forearm injury, Carlos Alcaraz, the third-ranked player in the world, has withdrew from the Italian Open scheduled for next week.
The Rome competition takes place ahead of the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the season, which begins in Paris on May 26.
On Wednesday, the 20-year-old’s defense of the Madrid Open championship was ended with a loss to Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals.
Alcaraz also pulled out of the April Barcelona Open and Monte Carlo Masters after claiming to have experienced pain when competing in Madrid.
Regretfully, I will be unable to perform in Rome. In a statement posted on Instagram, external, the two-time Grand Slam champion stated, “I need to rest so I can recover and play 100% pain free.”
