Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has stated that the team attempted, but was unable, to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona in 2022.
Ten Hag and De Jong were teammates at Ajax for two years, during which time they advanced to the Champions League semifinals and won the Eredivisie.
Before the Netherlands midfielder made his high-profile move to Barcelona in 2019, United made an attempt to sign him.
After Ten Hag arrived at the club, the Red Devils made another attempt, but nothing came of it.
Casemiro and Frenkie de Jong would have been in midfield. They would genuinely feel a connection to one another.
“They would be a great match for one another. That’s a typical player; to play Ajax style, you need that kind of player,” Ten Hag said in a Sky Sports interview to Gary Neville.
