In the music video for “Squabble Up,” Kendrick Lamar honors “Menace II Society,” ICE-T, and other artists.

Kendrick Lamar has made a surprise release of his latest project, GNX, which includes the much-anticipated track “squabble up.” Fans have been waiting months for this song after it was teased during the summer. The title GNX is reportedly a tribute to the Grand National, the car Kendrick’s father drove him home from the hospital in after his birth.

“SQUABBLE UP” has already captivated listeners with its epic visual, directed by Calmatic. The video is filled with multiple easter eggs, paying homage to iconic moments in music and film. One notable reference comes when Kendrick raps, “Don’t hit him, he got kids with him,” which nods to the famous “Caine’s death” scene from Menace II Society. Additionally, the video features a recreation of the cover art from Ice-T’s album Power, blending various eras of music videos to create a unique visual experience.

Another significant shoutout in the video goes to Isaac Hayes, with the character of Black Moses making a prominent appearance in the background. Kendrick also emphasizes the Compton Christmas Parade at the video’s conclusion, hinting at an exciting event to come and possibly linking it to the regional identity of Los Angeles and Compton.

The album GNX is expected to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, with “squabble up” aiming for the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. This release is set to be a major moment for Kendrick, with his creativity and cultural references once again shining through in both the music and visual aspects of the project.
