Burnley 1-4 Newcastle: Vincent Kompany’s side move closer to relegation with chastening home defeat

Report and free match highlights: Newcastle defeats Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor thanks to goals from Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes, and Alexander Isak; the Clarets’ header from Dara O’Shea offers little solace as they still need to win both of their remaining games and pray that the results go their way.

After a dreadful afternoon, Burnley found themselves five points outside of Premier League safety as Nottingham Forest’s victory and Newcastle’s 4-1 thrashing sent them closer to relegation.

After Forest’s 3-1 success over already-relegated Sheffield United on Saturday, the Clarets had a remote chance of finishing the day outside the relegation zone. However, they now need to win both of their remaining games and hope that other results go their way in order to avoid the drop.

At Turf Moor, Burnley even got off to a strong start, with Lorenz Assignon posing a special threat. However, after Callum Wilson scored on the rebound of Alexander Isak’s strike, the hosts crumbled, and before halftime, goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff put Newcastle out of reach.

The Sweden striker quickly made up for his missed penalty, sweeping in Jacob Murphy’s cross to secure sixth place. The Magpies could afford to see Isak miss a penalty early in the second half, at least until Manchester United’s live match against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Even though Dara O’Shea provided a late consolation goal from a corner, Burnley has to win their remaining games against Tottenham and Nottingham Forest to avoid relegation. Another crushing loss would guarantee them of that.

Because of their far superior goal differential, Forest’s performance against Chelsea next week, live on Sky Sports, should be enough to send the Clarets down even with a draw.
