After Finidi George was named the new head coach of the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Emmanuel Amunike, a well-known football player and past Africa Footballer of the Year, finally spoke out.
Amunike was seen as the front-runner for the job, but Finidi—who had previously assisted Jose Peseiro during the 2023 AFCON, in which Nigeria finished second—was chosen instead of Amunike. Amunike asserts that his expulsion is the result of long-standing hostility between some football officials and the NFF, which pointed to continuity as a major consideration in their choice.
He asserts that after he submitted an application for the coaching position, these people planned unfavorable press stories to damage his name. Amunike strongly refutes these accusations, highlighting his dedication to honesty and self-control.
He acknowledges the “bad blood” but doesn’t let it stop him in the face of the defeat.
