Andy Irving of West Ham United is reportedly being watched by Celtic as the January transfer window approaches.
The Daily Mail claims that in an attempt to boost their already overcrowded engine room, the Scottish champions are considering a possible move for the 24-year-old midfielder.
Irving was originally a target for Celtic in the summer, when they were also interested in Luke McCowan. Irving stayed with West Ham and has since made a few appearances for the Hammers, although McCowan eventually arrived from Dundee for £1 million.
This season, the former Hearts player has played seven games for the Hammers.
The Hoops have one of the best midfield corps in recent memory, with Callum McGregor, Paulo Bernardo, Arne Engels, Reo Hatate, and Luke McCowan already vying for opportunities. Irving’s inclusion might be seen as an attempt to improve squad depth for their domestic and European competitions or to future-proof the team.
Such a move, though, might depend on departures. There doesn’t appear to be anyone in the middle of the pitch who would meet that description, although fringe players or those looking for greater playing time might move on during the January window.
Even while the rumors are intriguing, it doesn’t seem likely that they will add another midfield player in January unless the team undergoes a major roster shakeup, which is also doubtful. It’s possible that Celtic has other priorities, especially in the wings.
Andy Irving is still on Celtic’s radar, but it will probably depend on how their January transfer plans go before the team takes any action.
