Manchester United has decided to cancel their end-of-season awards ceremony, as confirmed tonight by The Athletic.
The awards dinner, originally set for May 20, just five days before the Red Devils head to Wembley to face local rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final – a trophy currently held by their opponents.
However, discussions within the hierarchy – including manager Erik ten Hag – have led the board to opt out of hosting the event this year. The last time they reconsidered was in 2021/2022 after United’s turbulent season ended with Ralf Rangnick in charge and the club finishing 6th.
This time, their prospects for a high finish are slim given their recent performances. United has gone three matches without a win, conceding six goals and scoring just once. As a result, Ten Hag’s team currently sits in eighth place, on course for their worst-ever Premier League finish.
Despite the cancellation, awards will still be distributed among the players from the men’s, women’s, and youth teams, including the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards.
It is believed that the decision aims to ensure the squad is fully focused on winning the final, though speculation about Ten Hag’s future, along with dismal results, is thought to have played a part.
