Mbappe’s Out, Osimhen In
Kylian Mbappe once again showcased his prowess for PSG, having scored a remarkable 255 goals for the club.
His potential departure signals the definitive end of the Galactico era, characterized by the acquisitions of stars like Brazilian Neymar and World Cup champion Lionel Messi. Despite the substantial investments in players and salaries, achieving Champions League success has remained elusive for PSG. However, insiders acknowledge significant progress both on and off the field.
Two summers ago, PSG embarked on a new strategy, prioritizing the assembly of a young, ambitious, and predominantly French squad, moving away from the excesses of the Galactico era. This season, they reached the Champions League semi-finals with their youngest-ever European squad, fielding the youngest starting lineup from the round of 16 onwards.
Beyond the game, PSG has invested in a state-of-the-art €300m (£258m) training facility and is planning a move to a new stadium. In December, US private equity firm Arctos Partners acquired a 12.5% stake in PSG, valuing the club at €4bn (£3.4bn).
Meanwhile, Mbappe’s potential departure is expected to trigger a busy transfer window. PSG, among a select few clubs, could afford Napoli forward Victor Osimhen’s €120m (£107m) release clause.
Manager Luis Enrique will have funds at his disposal this summer, but any new signings must integrate into the club’s evolving culture. While not guaranteed, losing Mbappe, their star player, to 14-time Champions League winners Real Madrid would significantly intensify their challenge for European glory.
