The long-awaited sequel to Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion is inching closer to becoming a reality! Mira Sorvino recently shared that a follow-up to the beloved 1997 comedy is “so close to being greenlit.” The project has already secured a director, and both Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are onboard as executive producers. The original screenwriter, Robin Schiff, has written multiple drafts of a script that Sorvino promises will be “amazing and funny,” ensuring it will resonate with fans.
Not only will Sorvino and Kudrow return as Romy and Michele, but nearly every significant character from the original film is expected to make a comeback, pending their deals. The sequel could start filming in the second quarter of 2025, though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
The original movie, directed by David Mirkin, followed Romy and Michele as they attend their 10-year high school reunion in Tucson, Arizona, determined to impress their former bullies with fabricated success stories. The film became a cult classic, with memorable performances by Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, and Justin Theroux, among others.
Meanwhile, Lisa Kudrow fans can also look forward to an exciting new Netflix project from her this month!
